Fractures, Part 2: Metatarsal Fractures
By Queens, NY’s Favorite Podiatrist

Fractures By Queens N Y PodiatristGood morning, NYC!

We have begun fall, but we still have some summer weather lingering. Summer or fall, though, a change in weather never stops a New Yorker!

Football season is upon us. Students are back in dance classes. Ladies, we are soon returning to our high heeled booties and boots. So what kinds of injury can occur? The answer: fifth metatarsal fractures, aka “Jones Fractures.”

WHAT IS A JONES FRACTURE?

A Jones fracture occurs when there is twisting or falling injury to the foot and ankle. Trauma occurs to the outside of the long bone in the foot (fifth metatarsal). It is one of most common injuries to the foot. Because it occurs in area where there is decreased blood flow, it takes longer to heal.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms that occur are the following:

  • Pain
  • Bruising (black and blue)
  • Swelling
  • Difficulty walking (depending on location)

DIAGNOSIS

Fractures are diagnosed with a history and physical examination by your Queens, NY, podiatrist. We will perform x-rays to look at the bone anatomy. A CT scan may be performed when there is a complex fracture. An MRI also may be performed to identify a stress fracture. MRIs can also evaluate pediatric fractures. Children have growth plates that allow their bones to grow. If there is an injury in this area, it cannot be detected by x-ray alone.

TREATMENT

A Jones fracture can be treated with 12 weeks of casting and crutches if there is no displacement (movement of the bone). Fractures that are displaced will require surgery. Using a minimally invasive incision (percutaneous incision), we can place a screw to bring the bone together. If there is extensive damage and movement to the bone, then screws, plates, pins and/or wires may be needed.

If you are experiencing foot pain and are worried you might have suffered a Jones fracture, then Weil Podiatry of New York can help to address and treat your pain. Contact your Queens podiatrist today for an appointment!
