Heel Pain Part 3
By Top Rated Washington Heights NY, Podiatrist

bigstock-126172166Hello NYC!  I see you all out and about as we get some warmer days. You are in Central Park running and biking. You are at the local street fairs eating delicious ethnic foods. You are in the gym doing boot camp and the elliptical machine getting healthier and ready for summer.

Gentlemen, do you have pain in the back of your heel after running, playing basketball, racquet ball or football?

Ladies, do you feel pain in the back of you heels after wearing heels then going to flats? Do you have pain after cross fit, Zumba or running?

You may have Achilles tendonitis. The Achilles tendon is that thick cord like structure in the back of you ankle. It is the longest and strongest tendon in the body.

As we age, the tendon can become weak. We are not as flexible (minus my yogis) as we used to be.

Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon. Inflammation is a natural response to injury or disease, and often causes swelling, pain and irritation in the area that is affected. Symptoms include: pain, aching, stiffness, soreness or tenderness within the tendon, nodules in the tendon and swelling that is present and worsens with activity. If you experience these symptoms, be sure to make an appointment with your Weil Podiatry of NY podiatrist. Your Washington Heights podiatrist will examine your foot and ankle, perform any necessary diagnostic test and prescribe the best plan of action for recovery.

Recommendations from your podiatrist in Washington Heights for care at home are the following:

  • Stretching

Towel stretch: take a beach towel and loop it around the ball of your foot. Hold both ends in your hands. Point and flex for your foot like a dancer against the pull of the towel. Repeat 10 times.

Runners stretch: place both hands against a wall. Bend your right knee. Extend your left leg behind you. Hold for 10 seconds and switch legs. Repeat 5 times.

  • Avoid flat shoes

Ladies- Try shoes that have a slight heel/wedge. Avoid ballet slipper type flats.

Genetlmen- Avoid flat loafers. Try shoes/loafers that has a small wedge/heel.

  • Warm Up/Cool down- Stretch prior to any physical activity and AFTER any physical activity. Both are equally important

There are many options to treat Achilles tendonitis and make you well. From oral medications, injections, bracing and non invasive surgical therapies, we will prescribe and treat you as an individual.
