Bunions Part #1 By Queens NY, Podiatrists

Orthopaedist At WorkBlog #6- Bunions

Good afternoon NYC!

A patient came in today and complained of a “callous to the bottom of my foot”. She denied pain but stated “it is annoying”. I diagnosed her with a bunion. She was quite surprised as she said” It doesn’t hurt”.

A bunion is a deformity of the big toe joint in which it is out of alignment. The great toe can remain straight or lean on the second toe. There is an increase of bone and/or soft tissue at the great toe joint.

Patients can be pain free or complain of pain with and without wearing closed shoes. Patients may have redness at the joint, callous around the joint of ball of foot, numbness in shoes and swelling.

There is a strong genetic link. You can “inherit” a bunion from family members. Many patients can relate and name exactly who in their family has the same problem.

Bunion can be cosmetically unpleasing to the eye, but medically it is foot disorder.

How do we prevent bunions?

Minimize heel use. The higher the heel and constant use cause pressure on the great toe joint. If you have bunion in your family, you are increasing you risk for having one. Wear comfortable shoes that have a wider toe box.

Standing for long period of time can also aggravate you foot. Consider supportive shoes.

Conservatively, Weil Podiatry doctors offer orthotics to stabilize the foot and reduce risk of bunions. We can also treat the pain with topical pain creams, physical therapy and injections.

We also offer surgical correction. We will customize a surgical regimen based of the severity of your bunion.  We are known for the Weil modified Scarf buinionectomy that has great results.
