Lisfranc’s Injury By Weil Podiatry Of NY

Good morning NYC!

I had some unfortunate news that a family member was in car accident. Thank God he was okay. However, one of his injuries was a possible “Lisfranc’s” injury. My family asked me what’s that???

Lisfranc’s  joint is located in the foot where the metatarsal bones meet the larger bones in the foot. There are many ligaments in that area. Injuries can cause the ligament and bone to be torn in the midfoot. Depending on the severity, it may take time to heal or require surgery.

The midfoot is the middle portion of the foot which the arch is located on the top portion of the foot. There is space between the first and second metatarsal which is called the “keystone” of the arch. A twist or fall can break or move these bones.

There are a several ways you can get a Lisfranc’s injury:

  • Fracture(break) the bones (metatarsals)
  • Tear/rip the ligaments
  • Dislocate the joint
  • All of the above

There are several ways in which the injury occurs from trauma:

  • Keeping your foot flat and falling over
  • Twisting injuries where foot remains flat
  • Falling from a height
  • Heavy object falling on foot from a height
  • Car accidents
  • Charcot neuropathy

Patient will present with pain, swelling, inability to put weight on foot and sometimes a deformity.

We diagnose Lisfranc’s injury through a clinical exam and x-ray. A negative x-ray does NOT mean there is no injury. If we are suspicious, we can perform a CT scan or MRI for a more detailed picture of the foot.

Treatment can vary from conservative care to surgical care depending on the severity of the injury. Sometimes, in the more moderate to severe cases, even with surgery, arthritis can occur.

My family member is doing ok and is in good hands to eventually WALK STRONG!!!!
